African family adopts Britney’s kids!, Slate.com

Britney Spears child fallSlate posts a hilarious story on a Malawian family’s adoption of Britney Spears’ children. A must read!

“Los Angeles, where the Federline children have been living, is one of the richest cities in the world, trapped in a seemingly endless cycle of depravity, narcissism, and veganism. Nearly 27 percent of the children in Los Angeles suffer the misfortune of having celebrity parents. Mr. and Mrs. M were stunned by the deplorable conditions these victims live in. Children are subject to verbal abuse via cell phone, and babies are dangled over balcony railings. “Fathers kill mothers, and then put out badly written books about it,” Mr. M said. “And the names these children must bear,” said Mrs. M. “Apple, Fifi Trixibell, Fuchsia, Moxie CrimeFighter, Pilot Inspektor, Sage Moonblood—what kind of future can these poor children have?” – Slate.com

“Africa:The Next Chapter” videos premiere

The good folks at TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) have debuted the first videos from the powerful TEDGlobal 2007 conference held in Tanzania earlier this year. Called “Africa: The Next Chapter”, the conference featured talks from many of Africa’s current innovators.  The first few uploaded videos include South African investment banker Euvin Nadoo – who I met at the Harvard Club in New York in April – describing a continent poised to light up, Ghanaian economist George Ayittey’s lacerating criticism of Africa’s “hippo generation” to inspiring appeal for the “cheetah generation” to arise, former Finance Minister of Nigeria Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala showing how the different pieces of the aid vs trade argument could be reconciled, and finally 19-year-old Malawian inventor William Kamkwamba who won a standing ovation for his shy 3-minute interview, revealing how as a 14-year-old he solved his parents’ energy needs in a village which had no electricity. These first videos are a window into the minds of Africa’s growing entrepreneural class. I can’t wait for the other speakers’ videos.

Madonna promotes children’s book in Malawi

So it seems that Madonna’s children’s book “The English Roses: Too Good To Be True” was translated into Chichewa, the national language of Malawi. Madonna’s proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to Raising Malawi, an orphan-care initiative. Here’s some video of Madonna presenting the book to her adopted son’s countrymen. I especially like the part where she encourages them to read it because there will be a book report later. (via Ecorazzi)

Bill Clinton and Michael Jackson in the motherland

Michael Jackson - We are the WorldEURweb.com reports that Bill Clinton will join Michael Jackson in Rwanda in June 2007. If you haven’t heard Michael Jackson is looking to tour hospitals and the country’s television station to research ways in which he could best help the African nation.

Bill Clinton continues to be quite the friend of Africa. His Bill Clinton Foundation has reportedly helped Madonna’s Kabbalah effort in Malawi, and he was recently honored by my friends at Africare for his other Africa-based efforts. Can a concert with Michael on vocals and Bill on sax be far behind. It’ll certainly be more interesting than the “We are the World” performance in London.

Madonna getting African child?

MadonnaA recent British newspaper, The People, announces that Madonna might be looking to adopt a child or twins from one of her favorite African countries, Malawi. First there were rumors of her adopting a whole village and now it’s back to a child or two. Whatever the “truth” is, it is certain that Madge -as the brits call her- has her sights set on the the small African country. But the question is is this yet another publicity stunt or are she and hubby Guy Ritchie serious about providing a child in need with the care necessary to build it’s future. Whatever we might say about them Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, they are turning into the poster parents for adoption and are making a good effort to provide what the each of their children needs. Even I was skeptical about the adoption of Ethiopian baby Zahara. But with Brad Pitt endorsing Carol’s daughter’s products as a good way to care for black hair in the October Esquire magazine, the couple seem sincere. If the Madonna adoption rumors are true maybe she’ll consult Brad and Angelina or maybe even an African couple.
