THE AGE OF CONVERSATION
In March 2007, Drew McLellan, head of McLellan Marketing Group, wrote on his blog Drew’ s Marketing Minute about Wharton’s effort to create a collaborative book. Reading the blog entry, Gavin Heaton, Interactive Director at marketing and promotions agency, Creata, himself a marketing blogger at Servant of Chaos, commented, “And it sounds like it could be fun … but you know what, Drew? I reckon between a few of us we could knock out a short book and publish it. All we need is a theme and a charity … “
Three e-mails later, McLellan and Heaton had developed the idea for an e-book about the new era of communications driving today’s conversations. Through their blogs, McLellan and Heaton, both of whom are among the 25 most-read marketing bloggers in the world, invited other marketing professionals and other bloggers to commit to writing an essay about conversation. They set what they thought would be an impossible goal – 100 bloggers. They received commitments from 104 authors in less than 7 days.
“It just fell into place”, McLellan says. “The Age of Conversation was the perfect topic. The marketing industry is abuzz about how the citizen marketers are changing the landscape. This book captures that new phenomenon,” he added. Exciting. Sharp. Inclusive. The Age of Conversation is a book about community and the conversations that drive them”.
G. Kofi Annan’s chapter, titled From Aid to Opportunity: Afri-Activism transitions into a new consumer market, explores how communication technologies and social networks are transforming the celebrity Africa activism trend, facilitating cross-cultural conversations, and growing business opportunities.
The Age of Conversation is dedicated to Sandra Kerley, mother of marketing blogger Christina Kerley, who passed away recently. 100% of the proceeds to from the book sales will go to Variety the Children’s Charity — which serves children across the entire globe.
